Mastodon – The Hunter

Throwback Thursday brings us the masterful sounds of Mastodon’s 2011 release “The Hunter“. Their fifth studio LP, released by Roadrunner Records on September 26, 2011 in the UK and one day later in the US by Reprise Records.

Recorded at Sound City Studios in Los Angeles shortly before closing its commercial services in May 2011 (made famous by Dave Grohl’s documentary of the same name). The band named the album in honor of Brent Hinds’ brother who died in a hunting accident during the production of the album.

The album art features a wooden sculpture carved by AJ Fosik, marking the departure from Paul Romano‘s art style, who was responsible for all of the band’s artwork up until that point.

The band described the tonality of the album as less-progressive, more riff-oriented, and “a little more stripped down” like their 2004  release “Leviathan” — which was well-received by both fans and critics alike.

“Each of Mastodon’s previous four releases exist in their own worlds, and have their own specific characteristics – the genius here is that they’ve managed to pull in all that made those LP’s what they were and combine them to create something both familiar and unexpected.”
