A Basket of Mammoths – Unkept and Matted
Some very groovy psychedelic stoner rock from Melbourne, Australia.
This band is new to me, and I’m never ashamed to admit that it was definitely the album cover that drew me in at first; that cover artwork is fucking beautiful (in fact it’s currently my phone’s wallpaper background) and when I finally hit play I was taken to a place of peaceful 3-piece-driven serenity that immediately forces you close your eyes and lose yourself in the music.
The heavy parts are pretty rockin’ as well thanks to a tight rhythm section and some very competent lead guitar work, as well as a very unique vocal tone that carves the bands name in the mountain of great modern rock bands.
The reversed-reverb vocal effects on the title track (“Unkept and Matted”) are pretty far out, and the spoken word parts layered with the synthesized Irish pan pipe sounds like it was conceived during the late-1960’s wave of British classic rock. The album is concluded with what has become my favourite track on the record – “Like a Bird” which sounds like a brilliant combination of Pearl Jam and Kyuss. It wasn’t a difficult decision to purchase and share this one, and I recommend you do the same!
